What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a connective tissue disease affecting the gum tissue surrounding your teeth. If left untreated, the infection can cause the loss of the bone which anchors and supports your teeth. This can result in the teeth becoming lose and even rendered unsalvageable.
Once they become unsalvageable, the teeth need to be removed. In our office, we will do everything we can to save the diseased teeth and treat the disease. The disease can progress from gingivitis (red inflamed gums) to severe periodontitis. With severe periodontitis, it is often necessary to remove teeth to stabilize the disease condition. This is a disease that affects millions of americans. With early detection and appropriate treatment, including improved home care on the part of the patient, this disease can be controlled and/or eradicated and the patient can enjoy the quality of life that a healthy dentition provides.

Preventing Periodontal Disease
The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis where your gums are enflamed and bleed easily due to infection. At this stage, Dr. Adams can help reverse the disease by performing a professional cleaning and your continual good oral care. If fact, one of your best preventative measures is routine checkups by your dentist.
In addition to routine checkups and cleanings, the key to preventing periodontal disease is to avoid or lessen exposure to factors that increase the risk of getting periodontal disease.
These factors include:
- Bad oral care and hygiene
- Using tobacco products
- Bad diet
- Teeth that are crooked and hard to clean
- Certain medications including steroids, some drugs to prevent epilepsy, oral contraceptives, a few calcium channel blockers and cancer therapy drugs
As indicated by the list, some factors are avoidable but others may be beyond the control of the patient. In those cases, the best solution is to have increased checkups and cleanings by you dentist. At a minimum, you should have your teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months as part of your preventative care. It is also best to have a good diet and an excellent oral care routine. If you have to take drugs that can contribute to your risk of periodontal disease, consult with both your doctor and dentist.
In the worst-case scenario, teeth can be restored through a variety of treatment methods including dental implants. Peter Adams Family Dentistry provides both preventative, cosmetic and restorative dentistry to patients in the Chesapeake and Virginia Beach areas.
